Terms of Use

These terms govern your use of slightfuture.com ("the site"). By accessing any page on the site, you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, you should not use the site. These terms are written in plain language rather than dense legalese because readability matters, but they are legally meaningful and your use of the site constitutes acceptance.

These terms were last reviewed in March 2026.

Nature of the content

Slight Future is an independent technical notebook. The content on the site — including how-to guides, security analyses, tech notes, web development references, reviews, and journal entries — is provided for informational and educational purposes. It represents the observations, research, and experience of the site's editor and is shared in good faith.

The content addresses technical topics that involve system configuration, server administration, security practices, and software behaviour. These are domains where incorrect application can cause data loss, service disruption, security vulnerabilities, or other undesirable outcomes. The site provides information and context, but the responsibility for applying that information to your own systems, in your own environment, under your own circumstances, rests entirely with you.

When a guide describes a command, configuration change, or procedure, it describes what was observed to work in the environment and conditions documented on the page. Your environment may differ. Distribution versions change. Software is updated. Default configurations vary. A command that behaves one way on Debian bookworm may behave differently on Ubuntu or Fedora. The site attempts to note these variations where they are known, but comprehensive coverage of every possible configuration is neither possible nor promised.

No warranty

All content on the site is provided "as is" and "as available" without warranty of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory. This includes, without limitation, implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, accuracy, completeness, and non-infringement.

The site does not warrant that:

  • Content is free from errors, omissions, or inaccuracies
  • Information is current at the time you read it
  • Instructions will produce the described result in your specific environment
  • The site will be available without interruption
  • The site is free from technical issues

The site editor makes reasonable efforts to ensure accuracy and to update content when changes are identified, but this is a one-person operation and there is no guarantee that every page reflects the latest state of the software, protocol, or platform it describes.

If you find an error, the contact page explains how to report it. Corrections are prioritised and genuinely appreciated.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by applicable law, the site operator shall not be liable for any direct, indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or exemplary damages arising from your use of the site or reliance on its content. This applies regardless of the theory of liability (contract, tort, negligence, strict liability, or otherwise) and regardless of whether the site operator was advised of the possibility of such damages.

This limitation applies to, but is not limited to:

  • Damage to systems, data, or configurations resulting from following instructions on the site
  • Loss of data or revenue
  • Service interruptions caused by applying described procedures
  • Security incidents related to techniques or configurations discussed on the site
  • Any inability to access the site

If you are applying technical procedures described on the site to production systems, critical infrastructure, or environments where downtime has financial or operational consequences, you are expected to exercise the same due diligence you would apply to any technical reference: test in a non-production environment first, verify the procedure against current documentation for your specific platform, and maintain appropriate backups.

Intellectual property

Site content

The text, images, code examples, diagrams, and other original content published on slightfuture.com are the intellectual property of the site operator unless otherwise attributed. All rights are reserved.

Permitted use

You may:

  • Read and reference the site's content for personal and professional purposes
  • Share links to pages on the site (linking to slightfuture.com pages is always permitted and does not require prior permission)
  • Quote brief excerpts for the purpose of commentary, criticism, review, or education, provided that the quote is attributed to Slight Future with a link to the original page where practical

Restricted use

You may not:

  • Reproduce entire pages or substantial portions of the site's content on another website, publication, or product without explicit written permission
  • Present the site's content as your own work
  • Use the site's content to train machine learning models or AI systems without explicit written permission
  • Systematically scrape, mirror, or redistribute the site's content
  • Remove or alter attribution, copyright notices, or authorship information from the site's content
  • Frame or embed the site's pages within another website in a way that obscures the source

Code examples

Code snippets, configuration examples, and command-line samples published on the site are provided for practical use. You may use these in your own projects, scripts, and configurations without restriction. Attribution is appreciated but not required for short code examples. Extended code samples or complete scripts carry their own licence terms if specified on the page.

Trademarks and third-party references

Product names, service names, company names, and trademarks mentioned on the site belong to their respective owners. Their appearance on the site does not imply endorsement by or affiliation with those trademark holders. References to third-party products and services are made for informational purposes and editorial commentary.

The site contains a limited number of links to external websites. These links are provided for reference and context. The site does not control the content, availability, or privacy practices of linked external sites and is not responsible for any content, products, or services available through those links.

The presence of an outbound link does not constitute an endorsement of the linked site, its operators, or its content. External links are selected on editorial merit — because they provide useful technical context — and not on any commercial basis.

Modifications to these terms

These terms may be updated from time to time. Changes are noted in the changelog and the revision date at the top of this page is updated accordingly. Continued use of the site after changes are posted constitutes acceptance of the revised terms.

Material changes — such as modifications to the intellectual property terms or the introduction of new restrictions — are described explicitly rather than incorporated through minor wording adjustments.

Acceptable use

You agree not to use the site in any way that:

  • Violates applicable law
  • Attempts to disrupt, damage, or gain unauthorised access to the site's infrastructure
  • Involves automated access that places unreasonable load on the site's hosting
  • Involves impersonating the site or its editor
  • Involves using content from the site to mislead others about the source of that content

The site's robots.txt file specifies which automated agents are permitted to crawl the site and at what rate. Automated access that violates these directives may be blocked.

Severability

If any provision of these terms is found to be unenforceable or invalid, that provision shall be limited or eliminated to the minimum extent necessary, and the remaining provisions shall continue in full effect.

Governing framework

These terms are intended to be interpreted reasonably and in good faith. Disputes, should they arise, should be directed to hello@slightfuture.com in the first instance.
